Branded by the Trinity
Every Mass begins with the sign of the cross. As we cross ourselves, we say, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
Why is this so important?
Because we proclaim ourselves “marked” as belonging to Christ. What we do at Mass is not done in our own names, but is an action begun and sustained by the Trinity.

Questions:
- What are you stating when you make the sign of the cross and speak its associated words?
- Is there true forgiveness of sins during the Penitential Rite? Why or why not?
- What does the response to the priest “and with your spirit” mean?
